An inlay is used when the damage or decay is limited to the chewing surface of the tooth, between the cusps (the raised points on the tooth). It fits within the contours of the tooth and is bonded in place. An onlay, on the other hand, is used when the damage or decay extends beyond the chewing surface and covers one or more of the cusps. It is also known as a partial crown because it covers a larger portion of the tooth compared to an inlay. The process of getting an inlay or onlay typically involves two dental visits. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth by removing the damaged or decayed portion and taking an impression of the tooth. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory, where the inlay or onlay is custom-made. A temporary restoration may be placed on the tooth to protect it until the final restoration is ready.
